Impington International College to work hand in hand with Cambridge Handball Club for new Sports Scholarship

Impington International College has announced a new addition to its Sports Scholarship Programme, offering students an unmissable opportunity to train with specialist coaches while they gain a highly-regarded international education.

From September 2021, students will be able to apply for the Handball Scholarship which, offered in partnership with Cambridge Handball Club, will cover the cost of membership at the Club and will see students participating in specialist handball training three times a week. Alongside this, those enrolled on the programme will take part in regional matches each week and have the opportunity to represent the men’s and women’s teams in the England Handball Premier League.

Sports scholars will be given valuable university application support, including tips for applying for higher education overseas, particularly in countries such as Germany, France and Spain, where handball is a well-esteemed sport and an attractive asset to universities.

Impington International College has been offering IB programmes for 30 years, and was recently crowned the UK’s top non-selective provider of the IB by the Sunday Times Parent Power list 2020. As part of the Sports Scholarship Programme at the College, students will be offered the chance to study either the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), Career-related Programme (CP) or a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport, with all pathways bespoke to students’ interests and future educational progression.

Jo Sale, Vice Principal, Impington International College, said: “Our new Handball Scholarship is a fantastic opportunity for our students to tailor their education to their passions and make their sixth form experience one to remember. Too often we see 16 year olds limiting their choices post-GCSE but, with this offering, our handball scholars will be able to train alongside their studies, gaining from a practical approach to education, while achieving academic excellence.”

The Handball Scholarship will complement the other well-established Sports Scholarship programmes available at Impington International College, which include boys’ and girls’ football in association with Norwich City FC, girls’ netball in association with a variety of super-league teams, Rob Roy Boat Club and boys’ rugby in association with Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC). Across all programmes, time is built into the College day, so that students can access specific training equipment and the gym facilities at the on-site Sports Centre.

Sale continued: “We are proud of our international cohort here at Impington International College and hope that with this new offering we will be able to welcome even more students into our community. Anyone who wishes to relocate to Cambridge to take up this opportunity will be offered support with finding accommodation with a host family in the local area, from our dedicated student support team.”
